Try this white bean vegan pâté with black olives & miso. An easy vegan pâté which is basically a quick bean spread or dip & full of protein.

Vegan pâté is super easy and quick to make and more importantly it is absolutely delicious.
This veggie pate is made with white beans (cannellini beans to be precise, which are also called white kidney beans) and flavoured with black olives, miso, and herbs.
It has a wonderful savoury flavour or should I use that buzzword umami, that chefs and hipsters like to drop into conversations.

💭 Pâté FAQs
Pâté was created in France and was traditionally made from liver, so never a vegan option. It is pronounced pah-tay. The most popular vegetarian pâté is mushroom pâté.
In France, pate is popular spread on a fresh baguette or a farmhouse loaf of bread called Campagne and enjoyed with a crisp cold glass of white wine.
Pâté is usually served cold, but can be served warm. It should never be served hot.
🥣 What you need to make this healthy bean dip
Here are the simple ingredients you need to make this fabulous vegetarian pâté.
- White beans - cannellini beans, also known as white kidney beans
- Black olives - or you could use green olives (pitted)
- Miso paste - white miso paste is a good option as it is milder and there's a lot of flavour already in this white bean spread
- Garlic powder - or granules
- Thyme - dried is fine, but you can use fresh thyme
- Chilli flakes - I just added a little, but you can add more to make this a spicy bean pâté
- Salt & pepper - to season
- Olive oil
- Water - don't be afraid to add water to thin down pate or dips
See the printable recipe card below for quantities, method, and calories.
💭 Are canned chickpeas or freshly cooked better?
Soaked and freshly cooked chickpeas (garbanzo beans) are always better and cheaper too.
However, if you are anything like me and always in a rush and never organised, canned chickpeas are a good option to have in your store cupboard.
Tinned chickpeas are really good quality and very convenient.
I used the tinned chickpeas in this recipe, but included the weight, so you can weigh your freshly cooked chickpeas.

📖 Variations
Here are a few tweaks you can make to this quick bean pâté.
- Chickpeas - use chickpeas instead of white beans (cannellini beans)
- Green olives - instead of black
- Sundried tomatoes - if you don't like olives, use sundried tomatoes and swap the thyme with basil
- Rapeseed oil - instead of olive oil for a more nutty flavour
You could also try my Scottish mushroom & chestnut pate that is very popular for family gatherings like Thanksgiving or for serving at Christmas. I also have an easy spicy bean pate or a spiced Moroccan pate, which is gorgeous on toast.

🍽 Equipment
Here's what you need!
This black olive dip with white beans is a blended or whipped pâté, so you do need a bit of kitchen Tech.
You can use a food processor or a blender to whip up this easy white bean dip.
In theory, you could also use an electric stick blender and a jug, but I haven't tried it that way.

Store this vegan olive dip in the fridge in an airtight container for 5-6 days.
