π₯ Make it from peanuts
Shop-bought peanut butter often has additives as well as palm oil, which should always be avoided if possible. You can read more about palm oil on the WWF website.
Thankfully, it's super easy to make peanut butter at home.
All you need is a food processor or blender and some peanuts.
I like to use salted, roasted peanuts. They have lots of flavour and there's no need to add extra salt.
π« Dark chocolate or chocolate chips
Dark chocolate is added to the homemade peanut butter to make this tasty vegan spread.
It is melted before it's added so you can use squares of dark chocolate or chocolate chips.
The chocolate is melted in the microwave or a bain marie, which is a bowl suspended over a pot of simmering water (making sure the base of the bowl does not touch the water as the chocolate can seize).
π Can you make chocolate peanut butter with cocoa powder?
You can definitely make chocolate peanut butter with cocoa powder.
However, it does require some extra oil added to the mixture, as the powder will dry the peanut butter out.
Melted chocolate gives you a richer finish.
π©π»βπ³ Vegan alternative to Nutella
This easy chocolate peanut butter makes a good vegan alternative to Nutella, but made with peanuts instead of hazelnuts.
And it doesn't contain palm oil as Nutella does.
πͺ A favourite chocolate spread with children
Homemade chocolate peanut butter is a real winner with kids.
Heck, anything with chocolate is and we all know they need to include nuts in their diet, but they aren't always keen on eating them as a snack.
My son loves this vegan chocolate spread and keeps asking me to make another batch.
But, it's not just kids, big kids and adults love it too!
Talking about an easy vegan spread that kids (and adults) love, try this easy homemade maple butter.

π What you need to make vegan peanut butter with chocolate
Here are the simple ingredients you need to make this vegan chocolate spread.
- Roasted and salted peanuts - you can use plain and add a pinch of salt, but make sure they are skinned peanuts
- Maple Syrup - just a little
- Dark Chocolate - or dark chocolate chips
See the recipe card below for full quantities and method.
π₯£ Making a smoother chocolate peanut butter
This recipe makes a thick chocolate peanut butter, but you can make this a thinner and smoother spread.
Just add a splosh of either mild olive oil or some oat milk (or your regular milk) while you are blending it.
However, if you add milk, it will need to be kept in the fridge.
Add oil instead and it can be kept in a jar in your store cupboard for a few days.

Keeping it in the fridge would harden it.
Keep it in an airtight jar in a cupboard for up to 2 weeks.
