Looking for something tasty to spread on your crumpets or toast? Try this homemade vegan maple butter. Easy to make and utterly delicious.

Years ago I tried Moose maple butter and instantly fell in love. Unfortunately, it's not suitable for vegans.
I was thinking about it lately and decided to try making my own. After a few trials, we have this gorgeous homemade vegan maple butter.

π What is maple butter?
Maple butter (sometimes called maple cream) is a buttery spread flavoured with maple syrup and a handful of other ingredients to boost those maple flavours.
It's super easy to make at home with an electric whisk or hand whisk.
Heck, you could give your upper arms a workout and just use a wooden spoon.
β The best maple syrup
I don't think there is any argument on this one, the best maple syrup comes from Canada.
My friend Lisa sent me some her dad had tapped from the trees on his property and I have to say it's the best maple syrup I have ever tasted.
However, all supermarkets stock a range of maple syrups.
Just buy the best you can afford and if you are on a budget, go for the cheapest, it will still taste good.
π What you need to make maple syrup butter
Here are the simple ingredients you need to make vegan whipped butter flavoured with maple syrup.
- vegan butter
- maple syrup
- vanilla extract
- ground cinnamon
- salt
See the printable recipe card below for quantities, method and tips.
π Which type of butter is best for this maple spread?
You can use either vegan block butter or vegan spread (margarine) to make this dairy-free maple syrup butter recipe.
I used Vitalite spread which is made from vegetable oils and fortified with B Vitamins, which are pretty important to include in a vegan diet.
If you are using a block of vegan butter, like Flora Plant Butter, take it out of the fridge and allow it to soften before you try to use it.
You need the butter to be soft.
π₯£ Cinnamon maple butter
This homemade maple butter includes a little cinnamon for a bit of warm spice.
However, you can play about with the recipe and add more cinnamon, so that it's the star of this flavoured whipped butter.
I'd say try it with my recipe first then play about with it.
π₯ How to serve maple syrup butter
Too easy to eat with a spoon, but here are a few suggestions for actually spreading it on some baked goods.
- Crumpets - toasted of course (they are usually accidentally vegan)
- Toast - I prefer white bread toast, but you do what you do
- Pancakes - try it spread on freshly made vegan banana pancakes
- Banana bread - take banana bread to the next level, especially if it's toasted (try it with this chocolate chip banana bread)
- Scones - spread it generously on vegan chocolate chip scones or my vegan blueberry scones
- Buffalo sauce - melt maple butter as a base for homemade Buffalo sauce
π₯ Storing homemade maple butter
Once you have whipped up this dairy-free maple syrup butter, you can store it in the fridge.
I like to store it in a clean jam jar, but any airtight container will do.
The jars I use originally contained 370g (13 oz) of jam, if that helps size-wise.
It fills one just over three-quarters with vegan maple butter.
FAQ
Once you've made a batch of homemade maple butter, it can be kept in an airtight container in the fridge for a couple of weeks. It's lush, so you'll be lucky if it lasts that long.
Yes, you can freeze homemade maple syrup butter. Pop it in an airtight container in the freezer for up to one month. Don't leave it in the freezer longer than that and make sure the tub has a good seal, so the butter doesn't get freezer burn.
The best way to defrost frozen maple butter is to take it out of the freezer and leave it in the fridge overnight. If the mixture has separated, just give it a good whisk to bring it back together, then pop it in the fridge until you need it.

Keep scrolling for the full printable recipe (with full ingredient list, calories and nutritional info)
Step 1
- Add the soft butter to a mixing bowl and whisk with a hand whisk, electric whisk or wooden spoon until soft and fluffy.
- Add the first batch of maple syrup and flavourings (see recipe card below for quantities, method and notes).
- Whisk until well combined, then add more maple syrup and whisk again.
Step 2
- Carry on adding maple syrup and whisking.
- It should blend well if you do it in stages like this.
Step 3
- After each whisk, you will see it has become a little darker.
- Once you have whisked the last batch of maple syrup in, give it a taste to check the seasoning and to see if the maple syrup flavour is coming through well.
- Add more seasoning, if you think it needs it and whisk again, but go lightly when adding it.
- You can also add one more batch of maple syrup and whisk again, but I wouldn't add much more than that as you want a buttery texture.
- It may not need any extra seasoning or maple syrup.
- Spoon it into a clean jam jar or other airtight container and pop it in the fridge until you need it.
- Bask in the glory of being a domestic goddess!!
- Decide if you want to tell anyone else about it or keep it for yourself.

Homemade Vegan Maple Butter
Ingredients
- 150 g vegan butter (soft) (or spread/margarine)

- 1 pinch cinnamon (be generous)
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 7 tablespoons maple syrup
Instructions

- Add just one tablespoon of maple syrup along with the vanilla extract, cinnamon and salt.

- Add more salt, if you think it needs it and whisk again, but go lightly when adding it. You can also add one more spoonful of maple syrup and whisk again, but I wouldn't add much more than that as you want a buttery texture .It may not need any extra seasoning or maple syrup.
- Spoon it into a clean jam jar or other airtight container and pop it in the fridge until you need it.
- Bask in the glory of being a domestic goddess!!
