Vegan Lemon & Chive Dip for Chips

    Published: Feb 19, 2021 · Modified: Nov 18, 2021 by Jacqueline Meldrum · 8 Comments

This super quick, vegan creamy dip is great for dunking chips in, especially if they are spicy.

VEGAN LEMON & CHIVE DIP FOR CHIPS

Lemon is so often used as a flavouring in sweet dishes, but it's good in savoury dishes like this vegan lemon & chive dip for chips.

It's a super creamy dip with some tang from the lemon and a soft oniony flavour from the chives.

It's also very quick and easy to make. You can whip this one up in a couple of minutes, then pop it in the fridge until you need it.

I made a small portion for two, but you could easily make a bigger batch.

A bowl of tortilla chips next to a smaller bowl of lemon and chive dip

WHAT KIND OF CHIPS IS THIS DIP GOOD WITH?

Here in the UK when we talk about chips we are usually referring to what Americans call French Fries, although ours are somewhat fatter.

French fries or British chips would both be an excellent pairing with this dip.

What I was really thinking of was tortilla chips, which are also sometimes known as nachos. They are the perfect chip to dunk in this creamy dip.

Any other type of crisps would be good too.

WHAT ELSE CAN YOU SERVE THIS DIP WITH?

This dip is simple but versatile, here are a few more ideas for serving it.

    1. Chips
    2. French Fries
    3. Crisps
    4. Tortilla Chips
    5. Salty Pretzels
    6. Spiced Potato Wedges
    7. Sweet Potato Fries
    8. Sweet Potato Wedges
    9. Burgers (as a topping)
    10. Crunchy Veg
    11. As a coleslaw dressing
    12. As a potato salad dressing
    13. Pizza (for dunking). Try Vegan Sesame Bagel Pizza

Why not serve a dollop of this dip alongside vegan cheese and red pepper filo hand pies?

WHAT DO YOU NEED TO MAKE THIS DIP?

This dip is made with just a few basic ingredients.

    • Vegan mayo
    • Vegan Greek yoghurt (plain would do instead)
    • Lemon juice
    • Chives
    • Salt
    • Pepper

    You also need:

    • a knife - to cut the chives
    • a bowl - or jug to mix the dip in
    • a spoon - to mix the dip

    That's it!

Super simple and very little washing up. Result!

    lemon

    LEMON

It's best to use a fresh lemon for this dip.

You can get away with the bottled stuff for some dishes, but you want the fresh zing in this dip with no unpleasant after taste.

Although it is tempting, don't add any zest to this dip, it will look pretty but it will overpower all the other flavours.

You don't need a whole lemon for this dip, so keep the rest in the fridge for adding to your tea, a smothie or a sauce or stew.

    Fresh chives

    FRESH CHIVES

I used fresh chives in this dish.

I usually have some in the garden, but they died back over the winter, so these were added to my grocery shop this week.

You can actually substitute fresh chives with dried in this dish, as long as you make the dip ahead and leave it in the fridge for a while.

This will allow the dried herbs to add flavour to the dip.

You won't need much if you are using dried herbs. Half a teaspoon would be enough.

Also try vegan whipped feta with lemon and herbs.

    SMALL BATCH DIP

This recipe makes a small batch of dip, ideal for one or two people.

It is really easy to scale it up.

Just double or triple the quantities.

It's so quick and easy to make, I just make up a small batch of the dip when I need it.

HOW LONG CAN DIP BE STORED IN THE FRIDGE?

This dip can be stored in an airtight container in the fridge for 4-5 days.

For good hygiene, spoon it into another bowl to use as a dip, don't dip into the container it is stored in and then return it to the fridge for another day.

When you take it from the fridge, give it a stir before serving, just in case it has separated.

    CAN THIS DIP BE FROZEN

This dip is not great frozen and can become watery, so I don't recommend freezing it.

It's so quick to make, just make it as you need it or a day or two before and store it in the fridge.

As it's a small batch, you'll probably use it in one sitting anyway.

Making Vegan Lemon & Chive Dip - Step 1 - Mayo

    STEP 1

Add vegan mayo to a small jug or bowl.

Making Vegan Lemon & Chive Dip - Step 2 - vegan yoghurt

    STEP 2

Next add vegan yogurt. I like dairy-free greek yogurt, but you can use plain yogurt.

Making Vegan Lemon & Chive Dip - Step 3 - lemon juice

    STEP 3

Next add fresh lemon juice. It has to be fresh and don't be tempted to add zest as it would overpower the other flavours.

Making Vegan Lemon & Chive Dip - Step 4 - season

    STEP 4

Now season well with salt and pepper. Don't skip the seasoning.

Making Vegan Lemon & Chive Dip - Step 5 - chives

    STEP 5

Next add the chopped fresh chives.

You may add half a teaspoon of dried herbs instead if you make it ahead and let it sit in the fridge for a while.

Making Vegan Lemon & Chive Dip - Step 6 - mix

    STEP 6

Mix well and taste to check the seasoning.

Serve in a dip bowl (or two) and get dunking!

    Enjoy!
