The best vegan hot dog toppings for your next hot dog dinner. Ideas & recipes.

THE BEST VEGAN HOT DOG TOPPINGS

Good old American mustard and ketchup are perennial favourites when it comes to hot dog toppings, but why stick with that when there are so many options?

Don't get me wrong, I love a vegan hot dog with lots of caramelised onions, mustard and ketchup, but adding different toppings just gives you an excuse to make hot dogs more often and makes it feel like more of an occasion.

Scroll down for some really exciting recipes and ideas for your next hot dog night.

Pssst! They are all great on burgers too!

WHAT KIND OF VEGAN HOT DOG?

There are so many types of vegan hot dog out there. Like everything, some are good and some are blooming awful.

Now this may be controversial but if I can't find a good hot dog or I run out, I don't mind substituting them with a tasty, well-cooked vegan sausage.

Our family favourites sausages are Linda McCartney veggie sausages, but if I can get a decent hot dog, I like a smoky one.

The good thing about a classic vegan sausage is you can cook them in a grill pan, the oven or on a BBQ.

    BBQ HOT DOG PARTY

We're all getting in our gardens more now the winter is over and a BBQ is the perfect opportunity to spend time with family or friends.

A BBQ hot dog party is great fun and everyone will love it.

Grill your favourite vegan sausages and have those hot dog buns at the ready.

Set up a topping and salad station and let your guests put together their own spectacular creations.

Here are a few ideas for your hot dog station:

    1. Salad
    2. Pickles
    3. Vegan cheese
    4. Warm vegan cheese sauce
    5. Cooked beans or lentils
    6. Grated vegetables
    7. A selection of sauce
    8. Mustard
    9. Dressing
    10. Lots of sprinkly toppings like herbs, seeds, chilli flakes and chopped nuts
    11. Vegan potato salad
    12. Vegan coleslaw
    13. Vegan pasta salad
    14. Homemade tortilla chips
Make sure you have plenty of ready-cut hot dog buns, napkins and wet wipes at the ready too.
Keep the drinks simple with buckets of ice with bottle of beer, cider and soft drinks. Hang bottle openers on hooks that can easily be attached to a fence, or hook a tub onto the side of the bucket to store them.
    Most of all, have fun!

    SLICING A HOT DOG BUN

Now I don't want any arguments about this, there is only one way to slice a hot dog bun.
    That's right, along the top.
Slice it open and stack it high with your hot dog and toppings.
Come on now it's not a sandwich, so it should never be sliced through the side, just no.
Right now on with these delicious homemade toppings.
    Prepare to drool!

Oh some nice ideas. I might try them with bean burgers. I don't really like hot dogs.
