    WHAT IS CHEESE SAVOURY?

Cheese savoury is a traditional British sandwich filling.

It's offered up in bakeries (which often offer sandwiches and other savoury lunch items like sausage rolls & pies), cafes, and sandwich shops.

It's a cheese and onion mixture that's very popular and usually served on a roll (also known as a bun or bap) with salad or pickle.

The creamy savoury cheese spread is particularly good with pickle on a sandwich or roll. It gives it a nice bit of tang that cuts through the creamy filling.

And when I say pickle, I don't mean pickled onions or gherkins, it's more a dark coloured fruity chutney with spice. The most popular brand is Branston Pickle.

WHAT SHOULD I ADD TO A CHEESE SAVOURY SANDWICH?

Start with some dairy-free spread on the bread, this will add a protective layer between the bread and the filling and stop the sandwich going soggy.

Next, you want to add a generous layer of salad leaves.

Now add a generous amount of cheese savoury, then top with slices of ripe tomato.

Spread the top layer of bread with sandwich pickle, then add it to your stacked sandwich.

That's it, tuck in and try not to drool!

    VEGAN CHEESE SAVOURY SANDWICH FILLING

    WHAT'S IN IT?

Cheese savoury is a really simple sandwich filling with just a few tasty ingredients.
    • Grated vegan cheese
    • Grated carrot
    • Finely chopped red onion
    • Vegan mayo
    • American mustard
    • Salt
    • Pepper

    VARIATIONS TO CHEESE SAVOURY

    1. MUSTARD - I use American mustard in my cheese savoury, but you can skip the mustard altogether if you like.
      • If you don't want to use the yellow American mustard, you could add dijon mustard or wholegrain mustard.
    2. ONION - I use red onion, but you could use any onion you like. You can use white or brown onions, or even spring onions (also known as green onions or scallions).
    3. RED PEPPER - For extra flavour and colour, you could also add thinly shredded red pepper.
    4. SALAD CREAM - Not everyone uses mayonnaise in cheese savoury, some people use salad cream. Salad cream is a pale yellow British condiment which is sometimes which is often used in place on mayonnaise. It has a slight vinegar tang, but it's creamy like mayo.
      • Vegan salad cream is available in most supermarkets.

HOW LONG WILL CHEESE SAVOURY KEEP IN THE FRIDGE?

Once you've made a bowl of cheese savoury, you can store it in the fridge for 3-4 days in an airtight container.

    I wouldn't recommend freezing it.

If you're not going to use much, just make a smaller batch.

Vegan Cheese Savoury - a bowl of grated carrot, then the carrot topped with grated cheddar

    STEP 1

Add grated carrot and grated vegan cheddar to a bowl.

We like Violife Original Flavour grated cheese, but they also have a mature cheddar in a block or ready grated. Use your favourite vegan cheddar.

Chopped red onion added to the Vegan Cheese Savoury mixture, then mayo added

    STEP 2

Next, add the finely chopped red onion and mayonnaise.

You can use a different type of onion and vegan salad cream instead of mayo if you like.

Vegan Cheese Savoury mixture topped with mustard, then with salt and pepper

    STEP 3

Now add the mustard, salt and pepper and mix well until completely combined.

You can use different mustard if you like. I used yellow American mustard.

Once you've made a bowl of cheese savoury, you can store it in the fridge for 3-4 days in an airtight container. I wouldn't recommend freezing it. If you're not going to use much, just make a smaller batch.

What an interesting culinary lesson. I wasn't familiar with this type of sandwich - vegan or otherwise - but now want to make it for the flavors.
