🥣 Small batch salad dressing

There's nothing worse than making a homemade salad dressing or opening a new bottle from the supermarket just knowing that you aren't going to get through it and it's going to end up in the bin.

That's why small-batch salad dressings are so good.

A spoonful of this and a spoonful of that and you have a tasty dressing, but not too much.

This delicious dressing is perfect for plant-based diets.

  • No waste

💭 What is Thousand Island dressing?

Thousand Island dressing was first made 100 years ago by the wife of a fishing tour guide who lived in the village of Clayton near the Thousand Island region (which is an archipelago of 1,864 islands that lie over the Canadian and US border).

Easy vegan Thousand Island Dressing.

It was passed on and eventually tried by the owner of the famous Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in New York, who asked his chef to add it to the menu.

That was the beginning of its popularity.

The original sauce was made from ketchup, mayo and sweet pickle relish and today the dressing remains very similar to that with slight variations from place to place.

💭 Is Thousand Island Dressing the same as Rose Marie sauce?

Rose Marie (or rose mary) sauce is the British version of this flavoursome sauce.

It has very similar ingredients but uses Worcestershire sauce (you can get a vegan Worcestershire sauce) instead of pickle.

Made popular by TV chef Fanny Cradock in the 60s, it was often served on a prawn cocktail.

🍔 Secret sauce

Thousand Island Sauce is often served in diners and fast-food restaurants in America but is called secret sauce or special sauce.

Some people just call it burger sauce.

And it is rather delicious on a good black bean burger.

📋 What you need to make Thousand Island Dressing

Here are the simple ingredients you'll need to make this homemade vegan Thousand Island dressing.

Gherkins (dill pickles).
  • Olive oil
  • Vegan mayonnaise
  • Tomato ketchup
  • Fresh lemon juice
  • Pickled gherkin (dill pickles)
  • Cayenne pepper
  • Salt and black pepper

📖 Variations

It's best to stick to the original recipe if you can, but you can make a few tweaks to use what you have.

Swap:

  • Tomato puree (tomato paste) - instead of ketchup
  • White wine vinegar - or apple cider vinegar instead of lemon juice, or any white vinegar
  • Paprika - instead of cayenne pepper for a smoky finish

🍟 Serving suggestions

This salad dressing with its thick, creamy texture can be used in lots of ways.

Vegan Reuben Sandwich stacked on a patterned plate

Here are a few ideas:

  • Salad dressing - try it on your next salad
  • Dipping sauce - for crunchy vegetables (it makes a great dip)
  • Sauce - for tofu bites, french fries or tortilla chips
  • Burger sauce - served on burger buns
  • Hot dog sauce - it's good on hot dogs too
  • Pizza - a tasty dip for pizza crust
  • Wrap dressing - add it to your lunch wraps
  • Reuben sandwiches - add it to a grilled (toasted/broiled) Reuben sandwich, instead of Russian dressing

🍶 Storing salad dressing

I use clean jam jars for my salad dressing.

secret sauce in a jam jar.

You can see what's in them and give them a good shake before serving.

However, you can use what you have, any small airtight container will do.

Here are a few storage ideas:

  • Jam jars
  • Mini glass milk bottles - with lids
  • Squeezy sauce bottles - the type with a nozzle
  • Small mason jar
  • Salad drizzler
  • Small sauce tubs - airtight containers or tupperware
  • Mini wine bottle - one of those single-serving bottles. but you will need a jug to pour the dressing in

⏲️ How long will homemade salad dressing keep?

Homemade salad dressings like this one can be kept in the fridge for up to a week.

Dressings don't freeze well, as they separate and sometimes the texture changes.

So just make it as you need it.
