Easy Vegan Air Fryer Homemade Garlic Bread Recipe

    Published: Jun 30, 2022 · Modified: Apr 7, 2024 by Jacqueline Meldrum · 22 Comments

I'm obsessed with this quick vegan air fryer garlic bread made with flour tortillas. Soft in the middle, crisp at the edges & so delicious!

Easy vegan air fryer garlic bread

I'm actually drooling thinking about it and trying to tell myself that yes it will go with the sweet and sour tofu I'm making tonight, but of course it won't, sigh.

I will have to wait another day for my new favourite garlic bread.

This buttery garlic bread is made with mini (or large) flour tortillas instead of the more traditional French baguette and so much nicer.

Quicker to make than even frozen garlic bread, this is an easy side dish that everyone loves and you can make it no matter the size of your air fryer.

It's perfect served alongside pasta dishes, soup (especially homemade vegan tomato soup) or on pizza night.

I don't think I'll be buying shop-bought garlic bread any time soon!

    ⏲️ 5-minute garlic bread

This glorious vegan garlic bread is cooked in the air fryer in just 5 minutes.

It's perfect if you want garlic bread and you want it quick.

Seriously addictive and no leftover garlic bread!

    It's that good!

    🥖 Air fryer garlic bread

If you have an air fryer with shelves, you can just pop this garlic bread straight on the shelves to cook in a single layer.

Just remember that the top shelf always cooks faster, so you may need to move the garlic bread from one shelf to another.

If you have an air fryer with a drawer (air fryer basket), you can just place it in the drawer, unless you have some sort of shelf to add.

Love homemade flatbread? Also, try Chickpea Farinata (Socca) Flatbread.

    🥘 Oven-baked garlic bread

If you don't have an air fryer, you can pop the garlic bread on a baking tray (baking sheet) in the oven.

It may take a few minutes more, as the air fryer is usually quicker.

🧾 What you need to make vegan air fryer garlic bread

Here are the simple ingredients you need to make this crisp but buttery homemade garlic bread that's the perfect side dish with pasta.

    Quick Vegan Garlic Bread
    • Mini flour tortillas
    • Vegan butter - or spread
    • Garlic - crushed or finely grated
    • Parsley - fresh or dried
    • Chilli flakes - optional, but they take it to another level
    • Salt and Pepper - to season

See the printable recipe card below for quantities and oven temperature.

    💭 Can't find mini tortillas?

If you can't find mini flour tortillas, you could use large.

mini flour tortilla on a floral plate.

If you are cooking in an oven, keep them whole. There is enough butter for two large garlic breads.

For the air fryer, once buttered cut the tortillas into quarters, so they will fit.

🧂 Can you use garlic powder instead of fresh garlic?

I prefer the pungency of fresh garlic, but if you've run out, you could use garlic powder (not garlic salt as you want the flavour of garlic but don't want it salty).

It will still give you a good garlic flavour, but for best results use fresh garlic cloves.

    🌶 Make it spicy!

I added a pinch of chilli flakes to the garlic butter mixture which just makes it even more fabulous.

It's enough to add a little warmth, but not a lot of kick.

If you like things spicy you may add more chilli flakes to your tortilla garlic bread.

    🧀 Like it cheesy?

Sometimes only cheesy garlic bread will do all soft, cheesy and garlicky in the middle with crispy edges.

If cheesy is your thing, here are a few options, which are all available dairy-free, vegan style.

Easy vegan parmesan - hard vegan cheese for pasta and pizza
    • Cheddar - grated vegan cheddar
    • Mozzarella - grated vegan mozzarella
    • Parmesan cheese - try sprinkling on some of this easy homemade vegan parmesan with herbs
    • Nooch - another name for nutritional yeast, which gives a cheesy flavour

If you are adding grated vegan cheddar or mozzarella, try mixing in a little mayo before spreading it on your garlic bread, it will help to make the cheese oozy as it bakes in the air fryer.

Alternatively, you can mix the cheese into the garlic butter and spread it all on in one go.

    🥗 Add those herbs

    fresh parsley

Dried herbs are fine when you make your own garlic bread.

Try dried parsley, basil or oregano, they all work well or you could use italian seasoning.

Fresh herbs can be used too, if you have them, try fresh parsley, fresh basil or fresh chives.

Just mix them in with your garlic butter.

💭 Top tip for keeping your air fryer clean when making garlic bread

When you are cooking or baking dishes in the air fryer with butter or cheese that can melt or drip, it's a good idea to line the bottom or your air fryer.

Add a layer of cooking foil (aluminum foil) to the bottom of your air fryer or air fryer basket for easy clean up.

It will catch all the drips and crumbs.

🥣 Make the garlic butter ahead

Make up a single or double batch of the vegan garlic butter ahead in a small bowl and either keep it in the fridge or freeze in batches.

vegan garlic bread filling in a bowl

If you're keeping the garlic butter in the fridge for later when you're having pizza or pasta for dinner, or for when you have a craving, just cover the bowl in cling film (plastic wrap) or spoon it into a small airtight container.

It can be chilled for a few days.

    🌡️ Freezing garlic butter

For the freezer, you could either roll it in a sausage shape in baking paper or freeze it in portions in an ice cube tray.

Once frozen move the garlicky cubes to a freezer bag and keep for up to 3 months.

To defrost just pop them in the fridge in the morning and it will be ready when you need it at lunch or dinner time.

⏲️ How long will it keep?

For the best results and best texture make this crispy garlic bread with it's soft centre fresh.

However, as suggested you can make the vegan garlic butter ahead, then make this air-fryer garlic bread fresh when you need it.

It only takes a few minutes to bake.

    🍕 Serving garlic bread

Personally, I could just eat a whole tortilla garlic bread as a snack, but here are some serving ideas.

5 minute vegan garlic bread served with creamy tagliatelle
    • Pizza - Serve with pizza, it's lighter than regular garlic bread
    • Salad- Serve with a dressed salad like this grinder salad
    • Pasta - Serve with the pasta of your choice, try this one-pot vegan mac and cheese
    • Risotto - Serve with a mushroom risotto

This air fry garlic bread is a really good snack for movie night with a glass of wine too.

Also, try this quick garlic pizza bread.

Wow, brilliant to see this idea published. Been making these for years. One night we were craving garlic bread but no ciabattas or pizza bases.so experimented with tortillas. I thinly butter one large tortilla then stick another one on top and slather that with the garlic herb butter. Makes it a little more substantial and doesn’t go as soft in the middle.
